This term specifically pertains to an infectious disease affecting the upper respiratory system, primarily the nasal passages and the mucous membranes of the eyes. The condition is characterized by excessive discharge of mucus or other bodily fluids, leading to symptoms such as nasal congestion, watery or purulent discharge, redness, irritation, and inflammation of the eyes.
Generally, epidemic rheum manifests as a result of viral or bacterial infections, though it can also be caused by allergic reactions or environmental factors. Because it is highly contagious, the illness can be transmitted through direct contact, inhalation of respiratory droplets, or contact with contaminated surfaces. Consequently, epidemic rheum tends to spread quickly and easily among individuals in close proximity, such as in crowded spaces or during physical contact.
The treatment for epidemic rheum usually involves addressing the underlying cause.
