Franz Josef Land is an archipelago located in the Arctic Ocean, situated approximately 900 kilometers north of the Russian mainland. This archipelago was discovered in 1873 by an Austrian-Hungarian expedition led by Julius von Payer and Karl Weyprecht. It was named after the Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Josef I.
